ABOUT DARYL-ANN
Daryl-Ann Saunders is an internationally published, award-winning photographer specializing in portraiture, architecture and several long-term fine art projects. Initially self-taught, she went on to study at The International Center of Photography and The School of Visual Arts in NYC. She assisted prominent photographers while working as a photographer and photo editor for the independent NYC publications, East Village Eye and Ear Magazine.
Commercial/ editorial assignments and darkroom work has honed Saunders’ expertise in many areas and she often integrates fine art experimentation into her process, creating Polaroid Transfer portraits and hand-toned prints for clients. She exhibits regularly, her work is held in private and corporate collections (such as Pfizer, Inc. and General Electric) and her Polaroid Transfer work has garnered numerous awards - - to name a few, an MPA Kelly Award for Creative Excellence when featured in a Polaroid ad campaign and an Alice McReynolds Award by the Salmagundi Art Club in NYC during exhibition there.
She is a recipient of National Endowment for the Arts funding and has twice been awarded an artist residency position by The Brooklyn Council for the Arts in support of her Bushwick-based documentary photo series,The Pioneers of Bushwick project. which is comprised of portraits, written biographies and recorded interviews.
Currently, Saunders is editing her extensive collection of 1980s East Village, NYC material for book publication and exhibition. Additional long-term projects include - - “Alchemy: Mark-Making” (alternative process chemigrams ); “Beyond the Platform” (night images on subway platforms); “Urban Orchestra/ Solid World” (structures in the urban landscape); and “Crush” (human dynamics in mass transit).
Deep-seated curiosity motivates her to continue her fine art exploration; in alternative process technique and also in subject matter of urban life & landscape, rituals of leisure & abundance, and circumstances representing caution & danger.
